As a minimum you'll need the
military person's last name and approximate age. Having other
information such as their first name, middle initial and state will help
but it's not required. The results will return results with first name,
middle initial (if available) last name, actual age, city, and state.

Department of Defense DMDC Search
Enter name and SSN or name and birth information. Upon clicking
the "Look Up" button, based on the SSN and other personal information
furnished, the Department will advise you that it does not possess
information regarding whether the individual is on active duty, or that
is does possess information indicating that the individual is on active
duty.
Selective Service Registration Verification
This service allows you to look up a service member's selective
service number, as well as the date registered. Only registrations of
men born on or after January 1, 1960, can be verified through this
system. This service is operational seven days a week. It is not
available when system maintenance is scheduled from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m.,
U.S. Central Time, Tuesday through Saturday.

The DAV site has a large repository of membership sites, member
lists and other contact information available to you.
USAF and USAAF Accident Crew Name Lists
This is a large list of US Air Force and US Army Air Force
military members and civilians involved in air accidents over many
decades. It has been compiled from official documents and other sources.
Reports or other documents on these individuals are available with a few
exceptions. You can browse by alphabetical listing, or by year of the
incident.

web site so you can talk with someone within the government that can get
you pointed in the right direction.
